A forensic photographic examination considers the image and available information about how it was obtained. A source file, an export from an application and a screenshot of the same photograph may contain different amounts of technical information.

Subject of examination

  • Digital photographs, copies and fragments
  • Visible signs of processing and capture conditions
  • Metadata and the available file history

Sample questions for the expert

  • What technical properties and limitations does the image have?
  • What signs of alteration or processing can be detected?
  • Which details of the object are reliably depicted?
  • Are the source data sufficient for a conclusion about capture conditions?

The final questions are formulated according to the objects and circumstances of the particular task.

What to prepare

  • The earliest available file
  • Information about the device, copying and processing
  • The full image and related photographs
  • Specific disputed features and questions

How the examination is conducted

The content, technical parameters and provenance information are compared. A conclusion about processing is considered in light of ordinary transformations during export and transfer.

Scope and limitations

Failure to detect traces of compositing does not prove that all circumstances remain unchanged. Metadata may be absent or altered; it is not considered in isolation.

What the deliverable records

The result sets out the confirmed properties of the image, the basis for their interpretation and the limitations arising from quality and provenance.

Cost and terms

from RUB 50,000. The exact cost depends on the number of images, quality, format, number of questions, the need to examine a device and urgency.
