Submit the source file and the processed version separately
Files should be labelled so that it is clear which came from the source and which was created later. If several services were used, it is useful to preserve intermediate results. Do not replace the initial file with an enhanced image bearing the same name.
Describe the known operations
Specify the application, processing mode and actions performed: increasing resolution, removing noise, changing sharpness, generating additional image content or removing objects. If the settings are unknown, that too is a material limitation. A screenshot of the interface does not always preserve information about the full transformation process.
Distinguish visual clarity from the source of features
Enlargement may help reveal information already present, while some processing methods can create plausible details. Significant features are therefore checked against the source material and the selected examination method. An attractive image does not replace verification of its provenance.
What to prepare
- The initial file at the available source quality.
- All processed copies with clear names.
- Information about the applications, modes and sequence of operations.
- The source from which the image was obtained and known instances of resaving.
- The specific question requiring examination.
What to bear in mind
A generated detail cannot be regarded as an established property of the object solely on the basis of the enhanced picture. If the source file has been lost, this must be reflected in the capabilities and limitations of the analysis.
Outcome of preliminary preparation
A preliminary assessment helps determine which version may be used to examine features and which images are suitable only to illustrate the processing.
